Category 2.0 in the Chimni Home Typology A semi-detached house, is a single family house built as one of a matching pair, joined in the middle and sharing a common central wall. Known in the UK as a ‘semi’ and as a ‘duplex’ in other parts of the world, these homes come in a wide variety of styles.

Affectionately known as the 'Semi' When built in numbers on an estate, the Semi clearly distinguished itself from other types of houses built in the early part of the twentieth century. For what the private builder and ' most local authorities desired above all was the 'semi'; it was the 'semi' which fulfilled most popular aspirations'<ref> M.
