Architectural history is subjective. Any information is subjective. There is a wealth of information available on the web for homeowners, or for people interested in houses, architectural history, DIY. The Tumbla Wikia and associated Tumbla sites are an attempt to summarise and catalogue this information from the perspective of a homeowner.
For instance two people may be interested in acanthus leaf decoration. One person may write about the acanthus leaf as the primary decorative motif on the Corinthian capitals atop the Parthenon. The same acanthus leaf may decorate a pilaster column next to the front door of Victorian terrace house in Clapham. They are linked, and both tremendously interesting. However, an architectural historian will write about the first and barely give a nod to the second. With Tumbla, its the other way round.
We want you to understand how your home came to be designed the way it is, who lived there in the past, while celebrating it as your family home and helping you maintain and improve it.
There will be lots of other sources that go into any particular subject in a lot more detail, and where possible, we have given links to them and recommended the ones that the Tumbla team believe to be good. We have tried to write about building history in a way that is accessible to the average householder, while giving pointers to those those who want to delve further. The TumblaWiki is an affectionate guide to the houses and homes.
