Mews Houses

Our celebration of the converted stables buildings behind large city homes, that came to be known as the Mews House (Chimni Home Typology type 8.4.1). The word ‘mews’ originally referred to the buildings used to house hawks and falcons in a large country house. The name comes from the french word "muer" which means to moult. the Royal Mews in London was set up to house the monarch's birds. In James I's reign the Royal Mews stood where the National Gallery stands today and extended across Trafalgar Square down Whitehall. Many stately homes still have a mews associated with them.
